Berlengas

Berlengas is a splendid place. A must visit.

No wonder I have been wanting to go there forever. Since we first arrived to Portugal in 2013. I have heard great things about it and saw some videos. It took me a while to actually get there but finally we managed to organise a trip. We booked with Berlenga tour . They take you to the island on a smaller boat that jumps along the waves like I don’t know what. Really cool experience, not so easy to record things meanwhile 😬

The island is uninhabited. Beautiful scuba and snorkeling spot. We managed to see an octopus, it was so cute and curious.

There is a possibility to see the caves with a glass bottom boat within the tour; I can only recommend it, because if you just go for one day and don’t sleep on the island it is a great way to wander around and have a whole picture about the place. Plus of course the caves are marvelous. The rock formations have their own stories and they show a different face in each part of the day.

About sleeping there: It is possible. Next time we will surely do that. This time, my mom came with us thus we couldn’t take this more adventurous bit. She actually decided to stay at one spot of the island on a bar terrace to marvel at the view. Meanwhile, we went on to the other side through the hiking trail which was very spectacular. It leads to the Forte de São João Baptista which functions as a hostel, as we got to know, and you can jump from its bridge to the ocean if you dare. It is a nice spot to hang out and explore and snorkel. This was the spot where we saw the octopus. The Berlnega tour guys were really nice and offered us a ride back to the main harbour by boat, after our time was up and we sadly had to say farewell to our little paradise.

We can’t wait to return for a night some time in the spring when the weather will be warmer again, maybe towards the end of May.

As the guide explained this type of white fungus that you can see on the cave surface indicates that everything is ok with the water, otherwise if there was some contamination it wouldn’t grow there

the so called blue cave
the whale
the elephant
the upside down heart cave
forte de São João Baptista
the man silhouette on the left of the cave
the hole that is called the ear of the cave that was or is still helping fishermen to know about the sea condtitions outside the cave
our boat
the chapel cave; the guide told us that they even held a wedding here already with only the couple and the priest inside and the guests in boats on the water; now, how cool is that?
