Serra da Estrela in November is full of autumn colors. A weekend is a very short time to discover this beautiful mountain region in Portugal, but this was all we got. We will definitely return, perhaps, in the summer, when we can enjoy the stunning waterfalls and swim in the crystal clear lakes. I have seen mountains already all over Europe, but the Estrela seems so remote. The fog added to its mystery for sure and made it even more exciting. It was a new concept for me because down by the ocean the weather was still quite warm and as we were approaching the mountain, temperature dropped 15 degrees suddenly. So this made it unique for me to go from almost summer to winter. The autumn colours were wonderful. Dark red and brown leaves. Our hotel was just above the city: Covilhã. The place has little museums, like the museum of cheese and the museum of cherry. Showing the traditional ways of production by the local manufactures. If your aim is not really to have all the luxury a hotel can offer, you can chose to stay in a hostel nearby as well.
It is possible to do iceskating next to the youth hostel. They are normally open in the afternoons between 14-19. However, some inquiry is recommended beforehand, because the opening hours seem to vary.
If you want to discover the natural beauties of the mountain you can go in two directions basically. You either start your way towards the tunel de Serra and you will encounter Pedra da Ursa on your way, or you leave the main road at the big roundabout and go down the valley. In this direction you will find Covão d’Ametade with a beautiful small river flowing through a park creating a relaxing atmosphere. The scenic beauty attracts various photographers all year round, this eye soothing tranquility has to be captured.
The last stop on our trip was the Cascata do Poço do Inferno.
Very slippery so take care on the rocks there, but definitely worth the visit. The road leads through the forest and it is a dirt-road, but in good condition so no need for 4WD. I mean, I can imagine if one has the time, it must be a very beautiful full day walking trip from Covilhã to this waterfall and back. But it was just as beautiful by car.
